Abstract

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant metabolic disorder caused by a mutation in the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene. Hypercholesterolemia is usually successfully treated with a statin. However, such medications often have insufficient cholesterol-lowering effect or are not well-tolerated. In these cases, LDL apheresis is an option. LDL apheresis provides an effective alternative for treating patients with FH and preventing the progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). Although there are many reports on LDL apheresis, none has been related to cases in Korea. We report the case of a 20-year-old male patient who was admitted for chest pain and diagnosed with severe CAD and familial hypercholesterolemia. LDL cholesterol was controlled with lipid-lowering agents and LDL apheresis. (Korean J Med 74:S158-S163, 2008)
